Professional case discussion, functional nutrition & clinical education
For Practitioners
Sometimes you have a client or patient who doesn’t fit neatly into the usual box.
You’ve addressed the obvious pieces. You’ve gathered information, considered the appropriate interventions within your scope, and you’re still looking at the case thinking:
What else should we be considering from a nutrition, lifestyle, and systems perspective?
That’s where I can help.
As a Holistic Nutrition Professional, Director of Scientific and Clinical Education at the School of Applied Functional Medicine®, and doctoral student, I bring applied functional, holistic nutrition, and systems-thinking perspectives to complex cases, with particular interest in gut health, nutrition, the microbiome, and the ways these systems interact with the rest of the body.
Professional Case Discussion
I offer professional case discussions for practitioners who want another perspective on a complex nutrition or gut-health case.
This isn’t about taking over your client or having you create a competing treatment plan. It’s an opportunity to step outside your usual clinical lens for a moment and explore the nutrition and functional pieces of a case together.
Depending on the situation, we might discuss:
- Nutrition and dietary patterns
- Digestive and gut-health history
- Microbiome considerations
- Food reactions and dietary restrictions
- Nutrient and mineral status
- Supplement use and prioritization
- Functional testing and patterns within existing results
- Nutrition-related considerations that may be worth exploring
- Practical implementation questions
- Questions that may be useful to bring back to the client’s care team
I particularly enjoy cases where multiple pieces of information need to be considered together rather than viewed in isolation.
A second set of eyes, not a replacement for your expertise
You know your client and your scope of practice. My role is to bring a different lens to the discussion.
That might mean noticing a nutritional pattern you hadn’t considered, helping organize a complicated set of information, asking a question that opens up a new line of thinking, or simply helping you think through what deserves attention first.
Sometimes the most useful outcome is a new idea.
Sometimes it’s realizing that something doesn’t need to be pursued.
My areas of particular interest
Gut health & the microbiome
Functional approaches to understanding the gut ecosystem and its relationship with the broader host.
Complex nutrition cases
Especially when nutrition, digestion, food reactions, supplements, and other health considerations overlap.
Early-life nutrition & the developing microbiome
I have specialized training in early-life nutrition and the developing microbiome and have experience working with children and very young infants within an appropriate coordinated-care model.
Functional testing & systems thinking
I enjoy looking across multiple sources of information and considering how they may fit together rather than interpreting each finding in isolation.
Staying in scope
I’m a Holistic Nutrition Professional, not a licensed medical provider.
Professional case discussions are educational and collaborative. I don’t diagnose, treat, prescribe, or cure disease, provide medical nutrition therapy, or direct another practitioner’s patient care.
The goal is to contribute a nutrition and functional wellness perspective that can complement the work you’re already doing.
Education, speaking & professional events
In addition to individual case discussions, I’m interested in opportunities to speak, teach, and present to practitioner groups, professional organizations, conferences, and other educational settings.
As a doctoral student of Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine and Director of Scientific and Clinical Education at the School of Applied Functional Medicine®, I’m involved in translating complex scientific and clinical concepts into education that practitioners can actually use.
Potential topics could include:
- Gut health beyond the basics
- The microbiome as an ecosystem
- Functional approaches to complex gut cases
- Interpreting functional testing in context
- Nutrition and the gut microbiome
- Early-life microbiome development
- Systems thinking for complex cases
- Moving beyond “find the abnormal result and fix it”
I’m also interested in developing interactive, case-based education that gives practitioners an opportunity to work through the reasoning process rather than simply listen to a lecture.
